What,
you ask, was the beginning of it all?
And it is this.....
Existance that multiplied itself for sheer delight of being
and plunged into numberless trillions of forms,
so that it might find itself innumerably.
Sri Aurobindo
As I work in my studio I notice the random thoughts that pass through
mind. They appear as seamless relentless thoughts. Some related, some
not. I have discovered that I can just allow these thoughts. No action
or consideration is necessary. They pass as clouds in the sky. The sky
is not changed by the clouds. From the reading that I have been enjoying
of late I find these discoveries to be consistent with others who have
observed these tendencies. This observation is the influence behind the
current suite of work completed over the past two years.
Gordian knot, in Greek mythology, is the knot that cannot be untied. Like
the obsessively thinking mind, the ends are not to be found . The images
that have emerged take the form of skeins of scribbled line and ribbons
and point to that idea. Other drawings consider the illusion of separation.
All disparate elements share a commonality. They all have form and are
therefore not separate.
Most recently I find myself drawing tight little circles not larger than
the head of a pin and most are smaller than that. The drawings are about
20” x 27” which allows me to concentrate a massive number
of circles together. My estimation is that there are approximately 300,000
circles per drawing. The complete series will be four drawings on this
scale. There is a three fold idea behind this project.
1) It is my desire to see what a million looks like and to experience
that creation.
2) I find that by doing this work I can graphically see the idea of endless
thought. Each circle represents a non particular thought.
3) Consciousness is all form in countless multitude, seen and unseen.
Consciousness sees itself endlessly and takes delight in it’s vast
array of form and these drawings in a way express that to me.
Finally I find the mind playing with numbers while I do this work. For
example if one drawing has about 300,000 circles on it and each circle
stood for one individual on the planet. Then I would need to complete
20,000 drawings on this scale to represent the population of the globe
at this moment. It staggers the imagination!
